An independent curator and publisher, and an itinerant university professor, he has served a 25-year term as director of exhibitions at the Rheinischen Landesmuseum in Bonn. Co-organiser of the Documenta 5 and 6, and curator of more than 500 exhibitions in Europe and the USA, author and co-author of numerous books on art and photography, he has been resident art and photography critic of the newspaper „Die Welt“ and the „Kunstzeitung“.
